About this song
First sung on Christmas Eve 1818 in a small village church in Austria, it is now the world's best-known carol, sung in more than 300 languages. Its slow three-beat time and small steps make it ideal for practicing smooth, connected playing.
Practice tips
The dotted rhythm "A— B A F♯" keeps returning: fill the long first note and pass quickly over B.
Hold the F♯ in bars 2 and 4 for all three beats, and use them to settle your breath.
The D and high F♯ in bars 19–20 are the brightest moment. Play them a little louder.
