About this song
Bach arranged one movement of his own Cantata BWV 140 (1731) for organ; it is the first of the six "Schübler Chorales". Here we use the famous flowing upper line that runs from start to finish; in the original the hymn tune is played by another voice.
Practice tips
There are lots of sixteenth notes. Start at 50–60% speed and learn one line at a time with the section loop.
The highest note is the high D with a palm key. Pick only the bars where it appears and practise them slowly.
The busiest spot is bar 21 (15 notes). Loop just that bar and practice it slowly.
Bars 2, 4, 14 and 16 are the same notes. Learn one and you can play the others with the same fingerings.
Where the octave key goes on and off a lot: bars 5, 17 and 73. Keep your left thumb close to the octave key.
The biggest jump is in bar 9 (C → ↑C). Alternate the two fingerings a few times so your fingers learn them first.
High notes that use the palm keys (↑↑D and up) come in bars 56 and 70. Check their pictures on the fingering chart first.
We took only the top line (the melody). Transposed for saxophone (alto part). Repeats are written out as in the original. FingerNola fingering pictures and accompaniment are added to every note.
