About this song
A piano rag published in 1902 by Scott Joplin, the "King of Ragtime". It became famous again as the theme of the 1973 film "The Sting". Its constant syncopation makes great rhythm practice. This is the whole piece, from the introduction through the A, B, C and D strains with all repeats, a tone lower than the original in B♭ major. Only the end of the introduction, which drops into the pianist's left hand, is moved up an octave.
Practice tips
Many notes are tied over the beat. Turn on the metronome, start at 50% and count.
From bar 5 you move between low D and B♭. B♭ is the left index finger plus the B♭ key.
The piece runs over four minutes. The C strain, with a new mood, starts at bar 85: practice it section by section with loops.
