About this song
A 1902 rag by Scott Joplin. As the title says, it shows off "elegant syncopation", and its opening, racing down from a high note, is unforgettable.
Practice tips
The first two bars race down from a high note in sixteenth notes. Loop just those two bars and start at 50% speed.
For off-beat bars with rests and short notes, say the rhythm out loud ("da-da-da") before you play it.
The busiest spot is bar 85 (8 notes). Loop just that bar and practice it slowly.
Bars 5, 13, 21 and 29 are the same notes. Learn one and you can play the others with the same fingerings.
Where the octave key goes on and off a lot: bars 121, 123 and 137. Keep your left thumb close to the octave key.
The biggest jump is in bar 13 (↑C → F). Alternate the two fingerings a few times so your fingers learn them first.
High notes that use the palm keys (↑↑D and up) come in bars 99 and 115. Check their pictures on the fingering chart first.
We took only the top line (the melody). Repeats are written out as in the original. FingerNola fingering pictures and accompaniment are added to every note.
