How to start without reading music
Start the saxophone without sheet music: FingerNola's three practice steps (melody, metronome, backing), section loops, speed-up rounds and learning notes with the quiz.
Many people stop at "Do I have to learn to read music first?" FingerNola works the other way round: you follow the fingerings, and reading comes along as you play.
Practice in three steps
- Listen to the melody: slow it to 60% and just listen. Watch the big "now playing" card and follow how the fingering pictures change.
- With the metronome: now play it yourself. Keep going with the beat even if you make mistakes.
- With the backing: once it feels familiar, play along with the band. Playing a whole song through is where the fun starts.
Repeat only the hard parts
- Tap a bar number twice (start → end) and only that section repeats.
- Turn on "Speed up each round": it starts at 60% and gets a little faster each time, all the way to full speed.
Learn to read slowly, with the quiz
The fingering quiz shows note names at first and hides them after five correct answers in a row. A few minutes a day and you will start reading the notes on the staff without trying.
Good first songs
"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is arranged so you need only the basic fingerings, with no octave key.
